LONDON
CALLING
Despite the economic doom and gloom,
April Hutchinson finds a resilient London
hotel scene buzzing with major projects
at various stages of completion
The upper echelons of the
London hotel scene have been a hive of
activity in the last few years with many
embarking on major renovations or
initiating new bars, restaurants, spas and
designer tie-ups.
And occupancy rates in London have
not suffered as much as some European
equivalents, nor have they suffered as
much as the UK regions. The top five-star
hotels in London have still been raking in
phenomenal rates considering the current
circumstances, and seem ever busy.
Relying on markets which have shown
less of a travel halt, such as the Middle
East’s mass relocation to the capital’s top
suites for the summer and London’s
never-ending whirl of celebrity visitors,
hoteliers report rates have stayed at
respectably high levels. The weak pound
has also made London a haven for tourists,
despite the half-hearted summer here.
The only solidly good two weeks
weather-wise
seemed to be
Wimbledon:
Claridges was able
to rake in £900 a
