Tests show biofuel
boosts efficiency
USING a blend of biofuel with conventional jet
fuel can increase fuel efficiency and reduce
carbon emissions, according to test flights carried
out by Continental Airlines and Air New Zealand.
Continental Airlines’ test on a Boeing 737 in
January this year found its bio-conventional
blend performed as well or better than conven-
tional fuel, and showed a 1.1% increase in fuel
efficiency during the flight.
Air New Zealand’s test in December 2008,
flying a Boeing 747, found up to 1.4 tons of fuel
could be saved on a 12-hour flight.
It also found the biofuel offered some per-
formance improvements because of its higher
combustion temperature, including a saving of
4.5 tons of CO
2
emissions during the flight.
