FIU Conference on Statistical
Methods a Success
B. M. Golam Kibria, Department of Statistics
Florida International University
A
one-day conference on statistical methods was held March 28,
2008, at Wertheim Conservatory, Florida International University
(FIU). The second such conference involved seven speakers for
three sessions. Sneh Gulati headed the first and last sessions, while B. M.
Golam Kibria ran the second.
Alan Agresti of the University of Florida was the keynote speaker,
presenting a paper titled “Good Confidence Intervals for Categorical
Data Analyses.” His talk focused on survey confidence intervals that
perform well for estimating parameters used in categorical data analysis.
It was informative, and the presentation was wonderful.
Hugh Willoughby, distinguished research professor in the
Alan Agresti and Golam Kibria H. E. Willoughby
Department of Earth Sciences at FIU was the distinguished speaker
and presented a paper titled “U.S. Hurricane Death and Destruction,
1900–2006.” He gave an overview of the major hurricanes, their future
effect on the United States, their landfalls, and corresponding damages
and loss of lives. His talk was priceless.
Hassan Zahedi of FIU was the invited speaker and gave a presenta-
tion about intriguing and seemingly paradoxical problems in nontransi-
tive probability. He presented paradoxical problems, which arise from
nontransitive relationships in probabilistic events in game theory.
Finally, three graduate students from the department of statistics at
FIU gave contributed talks. All in all, the conference was a success. n
