NSF Statistics and Probability Program Directors

elow is a list of statistics and probability program directors at NSF. In 1974–1975,
Bruce Trumbo became the first statistician to serve as a program director. (That year,
he was actually an associate program director.) Until 1979, statistics was part of the
Applied Mathematics Program and probability was part of the Modern Analysis &
Probability Program. In 1979, the Statistics and Probability Program was formed.
In the list that follows, the program director’s home institution is listed in the year he
or she became a program director. In the last year he or she served as a program director, I
included moves from that home institution, if there were any.
Bruce Trumbo (repeated in 1978–1979 and
Nancy Flournoy (see 1986–1987) from NSF, went to
