22 Motor 63rd Grand National roadster showcases classics

Tim Deegan Staff Writer

POMONA – The weather was

great on Friday, Jan. 20, in Pomona for opening day of the annual Grand National roadster show sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts. This show has been part of California history since 1949 and was held in Oak-

land until 8 years ago when it was moved south to “The Birthplace of Hot Rodding,” Southern California. The Pomona Fairplex is the perfect place for such an event, right next to the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) museum and the Auto Club Dragway, home of the NHRA Winternationals and World Finals. Hundreds of beautiful cars on

display competed for the “Amer- ica’s Most Beautiful Roadster” award, which is a trophy so big it makes the Stanley Cup look like a toy. Thousands of man hours are dedicated to building or restoring these cars and entire businesses have developed as a result. But it’s not all about the cars; the

men who create these cars and pro- mote the shows have philanthropic goals too. Operation Mend, Helping Amer-

On display was a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro donated by General Mo- tors and customized by West Coast Customs. It was sold for $33,000 at the Mecum Auction to benefit Operation Mend. The Gavin R. This year, the Grand National Roadster Show’s pin striper event and charity auction directly ben- efited this cause. Thousands of people brought items to the best pin stripers in the industry for custom pin striping and their donations will help fund research and operations that will give a little boy or girl the chance not to live in darkness.
