MVHS hard-fought win over GOHS MURRIETA – The Murrieta

Valley Varsity Girls fought off an aggressive Great Oak Wolfpack attack in the fourth quarter to earn a tough victory in the Southwestern League Tuesday night, 51-42. “This is always a tough game

and it always comes down to a couple of points; tonight it was free throws,” said MVHS Coach Scott Richards, Jr. “We had been practicing against

their defenses,” said Coach Rich- ards. “So we were prepared for their 2-2-1 and 2-1-2 trap, broke the pressure quickly, and scored

early and often.” The Lady Nighthawks scored 17

points in the first four minutes of the game, prompting a fiery timeout by GOHS Coach Shannon Maurice, “They are on a 100 point game pace! Get out and play defense and stop somebody!” His team responded right away,

holding the Nighthawks scoreless the rest of that quarter and to only three field goals in the second quarter, while scoring 16 points as a team effort. The Wolfpack was within two points at 41-39 when the Nighthawks’ DeShea Wilkes

Girls JV Basketball team improved their records to 14-3 overall and 5-2 in league with a 33-18 victory over the Murrieta Valley Lady Night- hawks on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Despite a 13-14 second half ef-

stole the inbounds pass with 3:14 left in the game; she subsequently scored twice on the other end with two minutes left in the game to help her team to a 45-40 lead. This was Wilkes first game as a starter since returning from a knee injury a month ago. The Nighthawks shot 80 percent from the charity stripe in the second half. Murrieta Valley was led in scor-

ing by Karen Wolf (12), Brenda Bilton (11) and Wilkes (11). Star Nighthawk point guard Katie Clark was held to one-of-seven shooting from the field (a three pointer). “They played great defense on

Katie,” said Coach Richards. “Her job was to take the pressure and dish and she did that well, getting her teammates into the action.” “It was a win,” said Clark. “They

lor (7 pts), Alyse Finlayson (7 pts) and Kara Beilman (6 pts). “We came out with great defen-

sive intensity,” said GOHS Coach Sadiki Ellis. “We just need to maintain it. Lizzy Tuccinardi has filled in well since our original point guard moved up to varsity and Marissa, Alyse, and Kara were tough inside and on the boards.”

played aggressive defense on me, so we had other people put it in the hole.” “It was a great team effort,” said

Wilkes. For the Wolfpack, guard Izzy McGraw played aggressive de- fense, had three steals, ten rebounds and scored 20 points, including three 3’s and a three-point play in the second half to spark her team. “I wanted to win this one so

badly,” said McGraw. “But we had some defensive lapses in the fourth quarter and gave up some lay-ups.” “This is the best game I’ve seen her play,” said Coach Maurice. Even opposing Coach Richards

had this to say of her, “We have the greatest respect for her; she plays with a lot of heart.”

Linfield plays for

TEMECULA – The Linfield Christian Middle School Baseball team earned a chance to play in the championship game with a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Hesperia Christian. Kevin Wiseman pitched well as a

starter, although the usually strong Lion defense had some mishaps, leading to four runs in the first inning for the boys from Hesperia Christian. The young Lions re- sponded quickly by putting up two of their own runs in the first. In the second inning, Timmy Lee picked up for Wiseman and he too pitched well while the defense continued to struggle. After two innings, the Lions were down 6-2. Pitchers Timmy and Ben Mo-

ralez shut out Hesperia the rest of the way while the defense and offense came to life. A single run in the 3rd inning by the Lions fol- lowed by three in the fourth tied the game after four innings. Clutch hitting by Michael Brown,

Ben Moralez, and Timmy Lee, along with super base running by all, fueled the comeback. Lorenzo Burns led off the fifth and final inning with a walk as darkness approached. Lorenzo immediately stole second base. While Jake Bennett swung to

protect the plate, Lorenzo stole third. The ensuing wild throw al- lowed Burns to race home with the winning run where he was mobbed by all his teammates. The championship game will be

played this Friday, Feb. 3rd. Loca- tion to be determined.
