HE SESSION ON THE TOP 10 TRAITS OF A SUCCESSFUL GRAZING-LAND MANAGER DREW a standing-room-only crowd at the 2016 Cattle Raisers Convention. We
have an article from that session by Robert Fears, who was in the crowd. Compare the 10 traits to your own management techniques and priorities. Other articles this month add to the practical information we are pro-
viding our readers. If you have mineral activity on your land, fi nd some advice on what to
include in a surface use agreement in Gilda Bryant’s article. If you are considering adding a stocker cattle component to your ranch
business, take a look at Larry Stalcup’s article on stocker operation bud- gets, breakevens and management plans. If you are gearing up for hunting season, be sure to read the hunting
forecast for 2016, provided by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. I hope you will take a couple of days this month to step away from the
practical, on-the-ground work of ranching to attend the Texas and South- western Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) Policy Conference, Sept. 28 to 30, Austin. In a few short months, on Jan. 10, 2017, the 85th regular session of
the Texas Legislature will open. So many issues important to cattle rais- ers could be affected by the actions of our state senators and state rep- resentatives. Attend the TSCRA Policy Conference to lend your voice to the development of Cattle Raisers policy and to learn about the issues for your own benefi t. The agenda for the conference is in this issue. You will want to hear Evan Smith, The Texas Tribune, give an inside
look at the upcoming session. You will also want to hear Dr. Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University, talk about the odd conglomeration of factors that is affecting the prices of your cattle. Register for the TSCRA Policy Conference at
tscra.org. Registration packages are tailored to meet your time and dollar budgets.
