AL MASS “

It shows that even the lowest paid and most vulnerable workers can have a powerful voice when they stand united with their union behind them Dave Turnbull

Unite hospitality officer ”

‘wrong’ when asked what they thought of restaurants taking a portion of the tips that they left for staff,” Turnbull pointed out.

Evidence submitted by Unite and others in the consultation, which closed in late June, will form the basis for the case to change the law so that no waiter loses out on their hard-earned tips again.

While Turnbull hailed the many victories Unite has secured as the public has become more aware and restaurants have changed their policies, he argued there’s only one way to ensure tipping practices are fair.

“The surest way to eliminate confusion about tips is to introduce primary legislation to make it clear that money left by customers for staff belongs to staff with no deductions by management,” he said. And as of writing, that primary legislation is for the first time being seriously considered by government as it analyses its latest consultation.

Unite campaigns officer Chantal Chegrinec noted that the Fair Tips campaign would not have been possible without so many different people working together to affect change.

“Our Fair Tips campaign showed Unite at its best,” she said. “Smart and strategic campaigning, collaborative campaigning that succeeded in winning over public support.

“It was a campaign that showed the strength of our union with our Community members working side by side with our industrial members to take the message direct to customers in really creative ways,” Chegrinec added. “People saw this as a basic issue of fairness, thanks in large part to the work of our members.”
