regressive legislation and has always maintained that significant parts of it relate specifically to devolved public services in Wales like health, education and fire services.


“We are proud of the partnership approach we have built in Wales and of the positive working relationships we have with trades unions.


“We recognise it is in all of our interests to support the public sector workforce for the benefit of the public good. The only


right course of action is to repeal the sections of the Act that fall within the Assembly’s legislative competence.


We will be working with the Wales TUC and others on a legislative response to the Trade union Act, in preparation for the Welsh government's legislative programme, which will follow in the autumn.”


Wales First Minister Carwyn Jones has now announced that his first year legislative priorities will include a law to remove the Act’s “harmful” reforms to


workers’ rights.


Howard Beckett, Unite’s legal director, believes that the administrations in Wales and Scotland have the authority to repeal aspects of the Act which affect devolved areas, such as the public sector.


He warns that public sector workers in England face having worse terms and conditions than their counterparts in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland – a stark illustration of just how divisive the trade union Act could become.
