Mike Ashley admitted that they had underpaid on the national minimum wage and admitted that there would have to be a sizeable back payment to thousands of workers as a consequence of Unite’s campaign. This is Unite delivering.

noting that the union “worked hard to look after the interests of workers at Sports Direct and has collated a convincing body of evidence.”
But the campaign is not yet over – after winning a pay rise, back payment and providing the tools to empower Sports Direct’s warehouse workers to organise, Unite’s next goal is to get all workers on full- time contracts and on the Living Wage.
Unite Community co-ordinator David Condliffe explained why the Sports Direct campaign to date has been so successful.
“Unite Community and young members drove the entire campaign,” he said. “They led on social media and they planned direct
actions completely on their own. Many of these members had worked on the Pizza Express campaign and they were empowered by how successful that was. And so they instantly wanted to become involved with Sports Direct.”
Primarolo agreed. “None of this could have been done without a lot of people working together,” he said. “The credit for that has to go to our young members, Community members and industrial members who’ve given up their time to work on this campaign.
“And not least, credit goes to those Sports Direct workers coming to these ESOL classes,” he added. “It takes a lot of bravery to take that stand.
