Materials | product update ABS ELIX extends styrenic plating options
ELIX Polymers introduced its extended range of platable ABS- based compounds at the VDI Plastics in Automotive Engineering congress in Germany earlier this year. The current P2MC grade has now been joined by two enhanced performance versions, HH P2MC ABS and the Ultra HH4115PG ABS/PC blend. HH P2MC is a higher heat resistance

higher heat resistance and downgauging and is claimed to offer improved processability and cost compared to current alterna-
tives. Target applications for the new
version of the original P2MC product offering an HDT of 104°C and low volatiles. The Ultra HH4115PG ABS/PC blend is suitable for applications requiring
coompounds include automotive radiator grilles, logos, profiles, tailgate handles, and decorative interior parts. ❙

POLYCARBONATE
Riverdale claims clear benefit Teijin sets sights on
Liquid colorants specialist Riverdale Global has intro- duced a family of liquid nucleating and clarifying agents for speeding production and controlling shrinkage of PP and HDPE.
The +Speed additives are
said to be effective at minimal use levels, with typical let-down ratios ranging from 0.1-0.5% for the three nucleating agent grades and 0.2-1.0% for the fourth
POLYPROPYLENE NATPET upgrades impact PP grades
Saudi Arabia’s NATPET has upgraded its Teldene B20ML PP impact coploymer resin with a new nucleating package. The company has replaced its previous sodium benzoate nucleator system with Milliken’s HPN-20E product, which is claimed to provide more isotropic shrinkage. The new additive also offers better thermal properties, allowing cycle times to be reduced.
“With the improvements

made to Teldene B20ML, we are pleased to offer a more effective and sustainable PP reactor grade to the market, with great potential to add value in new application segments,” says Neaz Ahmed, Assistant Manager Product Application at NATPET. The company is pitching the improved grade at demanding applications including pails, packaging and automotive compo- nents.

nucleating and clarifying agent grade. All products are FDA approved for food-contact applications. The additives are available in pails or drums either in custom blends with a liquid colour or as part of the company’s GlobalPlus range of liquid additives. They are said to offer processors a more cost effective option than solid masterbatch or concentrates. “While liquid additives cost
more per pound than pellet concentrates, they contain higher loadings of active ingredient and thus can be used at lower addition levels. This translates into a lower cost per part. In addition, liquids can be metered into the process with more precision,” says Charles B Irish, Vice President of Product Development for Riverdale Global. ❙

PC lenses
Teijin has developed a new polycarbonate (PC) resin for production of smart phone and camera lenses claimed to outperform currently available grades in terms of refractive index and heat resistance. The new PC resin offers
a refractive index of nd=1.65 and heat resistance up to 150°C (the company claims heat resistance of current lens grades used in these applications is less than 145°C). Teijin is already offering
the resin in sample quantities for trials, with full production volumes expected later this year. It is also working on an additional lens grade that will offer even higher refractive index and temperature resistance. Both resins will be produced at Teijin’s facility at Matsuyama in Japan. ❙
