launched what it calls premium-quality TPS grades for sensory-neutral applications. They are said to boast low odour and low extractables as well as offering a customisable coefficient of friction, clarity, and sealing performance. Initially, they have been positioned to replace more costly and/or difficult-to- process materials such as silicone rubber elastomers in injection-moulded and extruded food and beverage packaging. Specialty formulations can be used to manage permeation of carbon dioxide, water vapour, and oxygen in addition to improving sealing properties in applications such as screw cap liners and wine bottle closures.
Consumer applications DSM says its Arnitel TPC is growing in popularity with producers of wearable electronics for soft straps. A new high performance grade that it created specifically for the application has been adopted by several companies, including Samsung for its latest Galaxy Gear S2 smartwatch. The supplier says that, as an indication of the strong importance of aesthetics in wearables, it is making Arnitel available in different scents, “enabling OEMs to provide their customers with an additional sen-
sorial experience.” DSM also points out that Arnitel can be used in overmoulded structures with other thermo- plastics such as polycarbonate, ABS and thermoplastic polyesters. Elastron has developed bondable grades based of TPS (SEBS) for several soft touch and grip applications and highlights new grades for bicycle handle bar grips.
