T
he greatest adventure that we as art dealers take is the quest to find the next great artist.
In the past 20 plus years of introducing artists’ works in galleries, it has been our desire and challenge to look for art in locations that others might pass by. Places like a rent-by-the- day motel in downtown Los Angeles where a young artist struggles to make ends meet, or the Tenderloin in San Francisco where drug dealers and artists work side-by-side, or by traveling to China’s glass region where great artists go undiscovered for lack of exposure to the western world. There are many great artists in need of discovery, and it is our passion to make that happen!
When looking at an artist’s work, we want to find something with a unique voice, art that is not contrived or uninspired. An artist might create a beautiful landscape, but if the work is like too many other beautiful landscapes, it does not possess what the French call “je ne sais quoi” or a signature style.
Another quality we look for is an artist’s ability to be prolific. The reason for this is

two-fold. Artists that are highly creative never run out of great ideas, thus their desire is to work all the time. Pablo Picasso created about 50,000 works in his career of 70 years. We do not necessarily look for artists that are as prolific, although we would not mind at all if we discovered the next Picasso on our travels! The second reason for an artist to be hard at work creating is the opportunity to show in multiple EC Galleries, and we also work with a small community of friends who own
When viewing artwork we do not judge based on pedigree. In other words, whether an artist has been formally trained or lacks formal education makes no difference to us. We judge what we see, how it makes us feel, and always allow the artwork to speak for itself. We especially enjoy hearing an artist’s story and why they create. Art is really our passion!
In the coming year we are excited to be traveling to artist colonies and studios in

galleries. Many of them look to us to discover the next great artist in hopes that they can also introduce the work to their gallery’s collectors. Many times we look at art brought to our attention through collectors, friends, and artists. On average we receive 20-30 artist submissions every month. We feel each deserves to be thoughtfully viewed and discussed.
Cuba, China, and Russia. Future travels will also take us to rural and remote parts of the United States where artists do not have the same amount of exposure that can be found in the big cities. We invite you to join us along the way as we find great artists to be part of our pursuit in the art of discovery.
