aniel Merriam’s work is well known for having a dream-like quality and ethereal nature. The magic and mystery embodied in his art tickles the imagination and gives the viewer the faintest trace of a feeling that maybe they have visited one of Merriam’s


paintings in a dream of their own. With masterful composition and astounding detail, Merriam gives voice to the dream, bringing in to a visual, waking reality what often remains an abstract. For Merriam, dreams and art are closely linked with the collective human experience. “The word ‘dream’ represents several things: night dreams, day dreams, and aspirations,” said Merriam. “All three are integral parts in the composition of art. In the greater scheme of things there is [also] a shared dream that we’ve been part of for generations. It is essential to our survival that we keep it alive.”


Though his subject matter is often otherworldly, Merriam’s art often speaks to matters more firmly rooted in the waking world as well. “I live through my art, so you can find many of my concerns written between the lines,” he said. “Occasionally I address things straight on rather than allegorically.
