DEEP IN THE ART

Ar Dentonts & Jazz Festival Now in its fourth decade

T

HIS SPRING marks the 36th annual edition of the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, a free celebration featuring seven stages of non-stop music, food and fine art in the heart of downtown Denton. Sip craft beers and sample treats fresh from the griddle under the leafy canopy of Quakertown Park, all while listening to sets by some of the biggest names in jazz, folk, blues and country. This year’s headliners include Lubbock country crooners the Flatlanders, classically trained pianist and R&B sensation Patrice Rushen & Friends, polka and worldbeat ensemble Brave Combo, and the Grammy-nominated One O’Clock Lab Band, the University of North Texas’ premiere Jazz Studies ensemble for the past 68 years. A juried art show showcases creations from the Lone Star State and beyond — jewelry, paintings, clothing, home decor and more. Meanwhile, kids can get creative with sculpture, tangrams and collage in the Children’s Art Tent and play percus- sion instruments from all over the world in the aptly titled Percussion Petting Zoo. Even the pickiest of eaters can find something to like from any of the six food courts, offering up everything from hot dogs, burgers and corn dogs to egg rolls, barbecue, funnel cakes and Mexican dishes.

FREE AND EASY: The Flatlanders and Brave Combo headline this year’s musical lineup. A juried art show features jewelry, paintings, home decor and more. And a percussion petting zoo lets kids play instruments from around the world.
