OVERLOOKING THE GRASSY KNOLL: The infamous sixth-floor room of the Texas School Book Depository that pro- vided an assassin’s view of President Kennedy’s motorcade in November 1963 is now part of a museum dealing with all aspects of the story.

N Dallas Take a walk back in time — to Dealey Plaza in the early 1960s

NO TRIP TO downtown Dallas would be complete without a visit to the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which presents the social and political landscape of the early 1960s and chronicles the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and its aftermath. The museum is located in the former Texas School Book Depository, where evidence of the sniper attack was found. Most of us have seen the video of the convertible carrying the president, the first lady, and the governor of Texas and his wife, but being present at the actual location where it took place conjures a flood of emotions. Little has changed at the Dealey Plaza National Historic Landmark District except for the addition of the

John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza, so it’s very much like taking a walk back in time. As you explore the museum, you are pre- sented with impartial exhibits that invite the visitor to explore the memory and effect of the events surrounding the Kennedy assassination. The permanent exhibit, “John F. Kennedy and the Memory of a Nation,” features hundreds of photographs, television and radio broadcasts, films and artifacts from the early 1960s docu- menting the events of Nov. 22 through Nov. 25, 1963, the world’s response to the assassination, major investigations, and President Kennedy’s legacy. Two areas on the sixth floor are recreated to appear as they did in 1963: the sniper’s perch

in the southeast corner and the staircase in the northwest corner where a rifle and clipboard were found. The permanent exhibit also includes the original cameras used by assassination witnesses and the FBI model of Dealey Plaza used during the Warren Commission investigation.
