This month Richard Punyer reviews G-Fore Gallivanter shoes and Stromberg Wintra Trousers G-Fore Gallivanter

G

-Fore began producing golf shoes in 2013. Founder Mossimo Gianulli created

the brand because he felt the game of golf lacked something – an aesthetic edge all golfers could tap into. First known for its coloured golf gloves, Gianulli wanted to expand the idea to shoes. I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on a pair of the 2015 G-Fore Gallivanter golf shoes, of which there are 11 options, both of upper, and a contrasting colour banding around the sole. The shoes come in a presentation box which exudes class even before

you open it. When you do you are greeted with the site of the wonderfully made Gallivanter. I chose the white or ‘Snow’. It has a coated ‘pebble’ leather upper, with white laces, tipped with red. The lightweight, shock absorbing sole has black/white and red layers around the entire shoe – the red matching the ends of the laces leading to great looks. The sole of the 2015 model is much more golf shoe than previous incarnations, which I felt were not deep enough to secure grip. The bespoke cleat design on the 2015 version promises more grip, protruding from the bottom of the shoe as other soſt/moulded soled alternatives. The shoes come with a

contrasting tonal set of laces – in this case red, allowing the wearer to further customise their look dependent on colours worn for the main garments. The footbed of the shoe is a washable and anti microbial dual layer construction designed for extra comfort. A soſt cloth carry bag completes the contents of the box allowing the shoes to be transported safely from car to changing room – another nice touch. They also come with their own, moulded shoe trees. The Gallivanter performs exceptionally well, both on course and on

synthetic mats at driving ranges, offering exceptional grip and traction throughout the swing, even in wet conditions. They are comfortable all through the swing motion, being supple and pliable at all times. Extremely comfortable to walk in, especially around the heel cup where thicker padding has been added, there is no slippage and they just mould to your feet. If the upper or sole is dirty, this is easily wiped clean with a damp cloth. When off the course, the shoe is just at home keeping you looking very smart in the clubhouse – if your clubhouse allows golf shoes ! All in all, a great shoe. Though at the upper end of moulded sole golf

shoes, there is no doubt about their quality, or the style they exude and create. In my view they would be a great addition to any golf shop shoe range, and be very popular with members.

is. The Wintra from Stromberg. If you haven’t got these in your shop yet, I really suggest you do. For all

R

those golfers out there that really dislike either putting a waterproof trouser on before a round or during it, struggling as you do so, the Wintra is the answer. Designed to be an alternative to waterproof bottoms, they are made of three distinct layers. The outer layer has a water resistant finish designed to be shower proof and keep you dry, the middle layer acts as a breathable waterproof membrane stopping water getting through the fabric, and the inner layer acts as a thermal layer to keep the wearer warm. On top of all that, they have the usual Stromberg classy feel and finish. They feel slightly heavier than a normal pair of trousers - although certainly not bulky or cumbersome in any way – and lighter than a lined pair of waterproofs. The warmth generated by the inner layer

emember those days when you wore waterproofs to stop your smart trousers getting wet and muddy, even if quietly you were baking inside ? There seemed to be no happy medium. Well there

is instantly noticeable – even more so when you put your hands in the pockets – you can really feel it working. The thing that really stands out though is how classy they look and feel and are still able to do everything they’re supposed to. I’ve worn them twice now in windy, drizzly conditions and they have performed fantastically well. No water got through, I was warm all through the round and apart from a couple of muddy marks they looked as classy when I’d finished and walked into the clubhouse as when I walked on to the 1st tee. I have to say I haven’t tried them in torrential rain, although I hope wouldn’t be out anyway! I’ve also worn them in very cold conditions when no rain was expected, and just as before they kept me warm enough not to have to worry about putting a pair of over trousers on. Again, it wasn’t a case of having to change to look smart to go into the clubhouse, and surprisingly with the thermal inner layer, I didn’t feel as though I was overheating while enjoying a pint. Washing aſter use was a piece of cake, on a 30 degree wash they came out as good as new. A great product, Stromberg have definitely got a winner with these. The usual Stromberg style and quality of material and manufacture, coupled with functionality all the way through the winter. There will be golfers at all clubs who play through whatever our winter can throw at us. I would recommend these trousers to them without hesitation. If you want an alternative to the waterproofs you normally sell in the shop, the Wintra is it.
