A revolutionary new breast cancer treatment has arrived

Coombs FRCS has been busy introducing a

cancer

surgeon Mr Nathan new breast

treatment for women in the south of England. From this autumn, his patients can be offered

a cutting-edge breast cancer treatment that’s normally only available in a handful of specialist centres in the UK. Te Breast Clinic in Swindon is the only cancer centre in the South and West providing targeted radiotherapy to breast cancer patients at the time of surgery. Traditionally, breast cancer surgery is

followed by many weeks of radiotherapy, involving daily trips to other centres. Patients have said that this can be more distressing than the surgery itself and the time wasted travelling prevents them from returning to a sense of normality aſter their surgery. Increased breast cancer detection through

national breast screening programmes mean women oſten come to see Mr Coombs (pictured) with very small, curable breast cancers. It’s these women who are particularly suitable for intra-operative breast radiotherapy, the pioneering new treatment. Studies published in leading medical journal

Te Lancet show that this treatment can be as effective at treating breast cancer as more traditional forms of radiotherapy. Te treatment adds only 30 minutes to the operation and women still go home on the day of their surgery.

Tere are also other significant advantages:

the treatment is more focused and targeted within the breast, women report less pain and fewer skin changes, and it has fewer serious side effects than standard radiotherapy methods.

Fresh hope for patients Tis exciting new treatment is available to Mr Coombs’ patients at the Great Western Hospital — although they’ll need to be referred specifically for assessment. Although some patients choose to use private insurance, those without insurance may find that an affordable and convenient initial consultation at Mr Coombs’ Breast Clinic can quickly bring clarity to their situation. Located within the Shalbourne Suite of the

Great Western Hospital, the Breast Clinic is only a few minutes from the M4 (J15).

Patients who are interested in having a specialist consultation with Mr. Coombs FRCS can contact his secretary for an appointment. T: 01793 646067 / 01793 646059 E: shalbourne.secretaries@gwh.nhs.uk
