he collection of small strokes and little lines create a painting, and an artist immersed in their diligent toil will ask questions to a captivated viewer: Do you truly notice all the little things sprinkled in The Garden of Earthly Delights? Have you ever really seen how a bird’s feather appears when it is perched? Do you notice the little girl in A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte looking right at you the whole time?
Little things bring together the story told in a piece, and a collection of all those little details will be on display this November at EC Gallery Seaport Village. The annual Miniature show requires that each piece be a fraction of the sizes usually displayed, revered as specialty to both acute connoisseurs and seasoned painters. Every person seeing a miraculous mini gives it the attention and awe of a mural three times their own size, all the while thinking, “How did the artist do this?”
Asencio, Gloria Lee, Daniel Ryan, Steven Quartly, Michael Summers, Michael Flohr, and Christopher M. are amongst some of the artists that will shrink their usually large bodies of distinct artwork, and yet still fill
the gallery. Although they are asked to create miniature works within their style, the artists’ imaginations are not stifled by size. As for the question of where to start, it all goes back to the basic principle that makes good art on any scale: composition.
“For me, the miniature offers the opportunity to truly focus on composition,” said Daniel Ryan, giving his take on this specialty art. He makes it a point each year to schedule in one Miniature show, and this November show will mark his seventh appearance. “Typically my ideas for the mini show are extended from my current work. The mini show gives me a chance to experiment with my work. I will generally make a discovery that I will later apply to my larger-scale work.”
Despite the size, it is not a challenge for the artists to express themselves in their style. It is always going to be their expression, be it 2" x 3", 11" x 14", or 36" x 27". The true challenge lies in what will be learned from this smallest art form. There is no limit.
Come marvel at these miniature wonders at EC Gallery Seaport Village November 6 - 8.
