4 U.S. athletes earn gold at Cadet Worlds

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzogovina –

Four American wrestlers stormed to gold medals with outstanding performances at the UWW Cadet World Championships on Aug. 25-30. UWW Cadets are wrestlers who are 15-17 years old. Women’s freestyle wrestler Ronna Heaton struck first with a title before men’s freestyle wrestlers Yianni Diakomihalis, Jarod Verkleeren and Gable Steveson followed suit. The U.S. placed third in the team

standings in both men’s and women’s freestyle.

Heaton scored takedowns on counters in each period to defeat Japan’s Saki Igarishi 4-0 in the finals at 49 kg/108 lbs. Heaton countered a leg attack midway through the first period and powered behind Igarishi for the first takedown. Leading 2-0 midway through the sec- ond period, Heaton countered another leg attack and scooted behind Igarishi for a second takedown. Heaton stayed strong defensively and kept Igarishi at bay as time ran out.

Diakomihalis, a three-time New York

state high school champion, defeated Jintaro Motoyama of Japan 6-3 in the gold-medal match at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. Motoyama opened with a double leg takedown to lead 2-0, but Diakomihalis

battled back with a takedown and a turn late in the first period to take a 4-2 lead into the break.

Diakomihalis scored a clutch spin- behind takedown midway through the second period for a 6-2 lead. Officials hit Diakomihalis with a fleeing the hold penalty late in the period to make the final score 6-3 in favor of the American. Verkleeren won the title with an 11-0 technical fall over Khayrula Nuradinov of Russia in the gold-medal finals at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

Only one point was scored in the first period. In the second period, Verkleeren scored a duck under takedown, then reeled off four straight ankle laces to nail down the technical fall. Steveson dominated 2015 Asian Cadet bronze medalist Khasanboy Rakhimov of Uzbekistan 9-0 in the gold-medal finals at 100 kg/220 lbs.

He led 3-0 at the break, on a takedown and a pushout. In the second period, he was never challenged, scoring three more spin-behind takedowns. Winning a silver medal for the women

was Alleida Martinez at 46 kg. Bronze medals went to Kayla Marano at 65 kg and Alexis Bleau at 70 kg for the women, and Daton Fix at 54 kg and Owen Webster at 85 kg for the men.
