Cadet Nationals freestyle
Colorado’s Mosha Schwartz was deter- mined to win a coveted USA Wrestling Triple Crown and he did just that after capturing a Cadet Nationals freestyle title. Schwartz earned a hard-fought and exciting 11-8 win over a very strong oppo- nent in Idaho’s Ridge Lovett in the 88- pound finals.
Schwartz came back from an 8-6 deficit to defeat Lovett, a past USA Wrestling Intermediate Triple Crown winner. “I trained all year for this,” Schwartz said. “It’s really exciting to finally do it.” Colorado’s Malik Heinselman followed by capturing the 94-pound title, defeating Michigan’s Rayvon Foley 6-2 in the finals. Trevell Timmons of Illinois overcame an early 6-0 deficit to down Nevada’s Giullian Nakamatsu by a 16-6 technical fall in the 152-pound finals. Arizona’s Roman Bravo-Young repeat- ed as a double Cadet champion in Fargo after defeating Pennsylvania’s Matthew Parker 11-4 in the finals at 113 pounds. New York’s Vitali Arujau rolled to a
quick 11-0 technical fall over Anthony Madrigal of Illinois in the 126-pound finals. Arujau was named Outstanding Wrestler.
Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champi- ons who also captured freestyle titles on Friday include Nick Raimo of New Jersey (120), Anthony Artalona of Florida (145), Jacob Warner of Illinois (170) and Nicholas Boykin of Tennessee (285). Cadet World Team member Dylan D’Emilio of Ohio held off Travis Ford- Melton of Illinois 5-4 in the finals at 100 pounds. Pennsylvania’s Sam Sasso earned a 4- 1 win over Utah’s Brock Hardy in the 132- pound finals. Illinois captured the team title with Pennsylvania finishing second and New Jersey taking third.
Junior Nationals Greco-Roman Minnesota’s Mitchell McKee came out strong and then held off Taylor LaMont of Utah 4-2 in the Junior Nationals Greco- Roman finals at 132 pounds. It reversed his fortunes against LaMont in previous Greco-Roman battles.
“I came in here as the underdog,” said McKee, a 2012 and 2013 Cadet Nationals Greco champion. “And I felt like I didn’t have anything to lose. I felt like I was able to control the ties and follow my game plan. It was a big win for me.” Minnesota added a second title when Ben Brancale downed teammate Ty Johnson 5-1 in the 138-pound finals. Pennsylvania’s Hayden Hidlay stunned Cadet World freestyle champion Mason Manville of Virginia with an early four- point headlock en route to a 6-3 win in the 152 finals.
Illinois turned in another strong per- formance to win the team title. Wisconsin was second and Minnesota third. Kamal Bey of Illinois hit a spectacular body lock to earn a crowd-pleasing 29- second fall over Nevada’s Andrew Berreyeas in the 170-pound finals. Louie Hayes of Illinois recorded a quick 39-second technical fall over Wisconsin’s
Dylan Koontz in the 106 finals. Dack Punke of Illinois improved on last year’s fourth-place finish by defeating Colorado’s Jordan Martinez 1-1 on crite- ria in the 113 finals. Gabriel Townsell won an all-Illinois bat- tle in the 126-pound finals, downing teammate James Pawelski 8-5 to earn the title. Nick Reenan of Texas powered to a 10-0 technical fall in just 26 seconds over Missouri’s Andrew Buckley at 182. Georgia’s Andrew Webb fell behind 6-0
early, but rallied to earn a wild 17-14 win over Austin O’Connor of Illinois at 145. Cadet World Team member Wyatt Koelling of Utah held off returning cham- pion Samuel Shields-Colbray 8-5 at 195. Pennsylvania’s Jared Lane struck early with a four-point arm throw en route to notching an 8-3 win over Florida’s Elijah Varona in the 100-pound finals. Brett Bye became South Dakota’s first Junior Nationals Greco-Roman champion after hitting a pair of breathtaking throws to defeat Oregon’s Riley Jaramillo by a 10-0 technical fall in the 160 finals. Ohio’s James Ford took control early in gaining a 6-3 win over Pennsylvania’s Jordan Wood in the 220-pound finals. Oklahoma’s Dustin Duffield struck for a
spectacular lift early and finished with another one to clinch an 11-0 technical fall over Missouri’s Matthew Schmitt in the 120-pound finals. Florida’s Dante Jiovenetta outlasted
Iowa’s Carter Isley 2-1 at heavyweight. Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman Colorado’s Mosha Schwartz, Oregon’s
Travis Wittlake and Indiana’s Andrew Davison highlighted the list of Cadet Greco-Roman champions. Those wrestlers also won USAW Cadet Folkstyle Nationals titles in April in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Schwartz rolled to a 13-2 technical fall over Idaho’s Derek Ramos in the finals at 88 pounds.
Wittlake struck for four quick points
with a takedown and a gut wrench en route to a decisive 6-0 win over New Jersey’s Ryan Karoly at 160 pounds. Davison came out strong en route to a 5-3 win over Pennsylvania’s Anthony Walters in the 182-pound finals. Returning Cadet Greco champion Roman Bravo-Young of Arizona rallied before holding off a tough opponent in Minnesota’s Peyton Robb 8-6 in the finals at 113 pounds.
