Trick shots help promote boys’ volleyball clinic

To promote a boys’ volleyball clinic set for Sept. 20 at the Ohana Sports Complex in Grimes, Iowa, the Iowa Region challenged its members to submit creative volleyball trick shot videos.

Individuals submitted videos to the Iowa Region by tagging them on its social media sites – Twitter, Facebook or Instagram – using the hashtag #TrickShotVolleyball. Out of all the videos submitted, the Iowa Region office selected a ran- dom winner each week. At the end of the campaign, the Iowa Region selected an overall winner for the grand prize that

was presented at the boys’ volleyball clinic. As one of its biggest focuses, the Iowa Re- gion is attempting to get more boys interested in playing volleyball.

“When guys see these trick shots, it gets them excited to play volleyball because they don’t have to know anything about volleyball to create a cool and creative trick shot,” Iowa Region Director of Adult Volleyball Events

Molly Steffens said. “The trick shot videos also give the girls a chance to teach the guys about one of the world’s most popular sports.” The Iowa Region challenges athletes, coaches and teams from other regions to join in the fun. “It was really fun being in my old gym and getting to answer all the questions the girls had,” Hill said. “I was in their same position not too terribly long ago, so it was cool to be able to encourage them.” Hill’s stardom has shot up in the interna- tional circles after joining the U.S. Women’s National Team upon selection from an open tryout in 2013. She was selected the most valuable player of the 2014 FIVB World Championship as Team USA won the gold medal in the event for the first time in 62 years. She later helped the U.S. Women win the 2015 FIVB World Grand Prix this summer in Omaha.
