high speed. The block was like a wall. Everything was world class and I thought this is the real volleyball team I wanted to see. They are very friendly and all the girls are so nice!” Mori refers to the different USA teams by their head coach
– Team Toshi, Team Lang Ping, Team Hugh McCutcheon and Team Karch. She is particularly enamored with the solidarity of the cur- rent roster.
“Each team has different colors, different play style but when they play as ONE, always Team USA has a bunch of POWER spirits,” she says. “Team Karch looks like a family of sisters. Young girls and veteran girls are trying to improve together with the same step every time. You can enjoy watching and supporting Team USA in a different way. We know the game result is important, but U.S. girls never forget their policy of simply enjoying the game.”

One of the many common threads among the USA’s Super Fans is simple: getting the sport they love out to as many people as pos- sible.
“A lot of the time I feel like John Belushi in Animal House, ral- lying the troops, running out the door and no one is following me,” says Garthoff, who has also done the “Thriller” dance at mid-court during a timeout, much to the chagrin of the opposing Russian play- ers. “The point of fandom to me is that passion and enthusiasm are infectious. When I’m affecting other people and they’re enjoying themselves – and the sport – more because of it, I’m happy.”
