record-breaking USA Volleyball Boys’ Ju- nior National Championships held from June 29 to July 5 in Colombus, Ohio, had plenty of Californians staking out some real estate on the awards podium.
The Southern California Region claimed seven gold medals out of the 12 possible, missing an eighth when NorCal rival Pacifi c Rim 18-1 downed The HBC Black in the championship of the prestigious 18 Open division. The SoCal Region, however, did fl ex some muscles in age bracket down in the 17 Open divi- sion. SCVC Quiksilver, coached by Bill Fergu- son, claimed the gold over San Juan VC 17-1 of Puerto Rico, while two other SoCal teams shared the bronze in that division: Balboa Bay ASICS 17 and 949 17 Black M-KC. For SCVC Quiksilver being on the big stage was not new. The same group won the 15s title two years ago, but lost in the championship match last year. SCVC’s story was part of a record-breaking week, which saw 479 teams compete across 12 divisions in Columbus.
That leaves the challenge to Dallas next year
to break the 500 barrier for the fi rst time in the event’s
history.The 2016 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships will be held in Dallas from June 29-July 6.
