EMC2 to build Scotchkote pipe lining application equipment

Automated metering and mixing equipment manufac- turer EMC2 Inc has been authorised by 3M as its first Scotchkote 2400 pipe liner application equipment manufacturer in the US.

3M’s Scotchkote Pipe Renewal Liner 2400 has been developed for the rehabilitation of potable water pipe infrastructure to help extend service life, reduce leaks, and preserve water quality. It is a 100% solids polyurea-based formulation that can help prevent corrosion and tuberculation and provide structural enhancement and be fully cured in 60 minutes, making it a good option where fast, non-disruptive repairs are required. “Scotchkote Liner 2400 is a

trenchless solution for lining existing potable water pipes on site. Its quick cure rate means water pipes can be returned to service much faster, but that also requires specifically designed equipment,” says Fred Schiller, 3M Infrastruc- ture Business Director. “EMC2 brings 35 years of experience designing and manufacturing meter-mix dispensing systems around the world. We are proud to work with them to renew this vital infrastructure.” For more than 35 years, Auburn Hills, Michigan-based EMC2 has designed and manufactured meter-mix dispensing systems for companies around the world. The company claims to have been among the first to

develop and manufacture both in-mould coating and levelling systems, which are used today by most automotive companies for production of plastic exterior parts. In addition to dispensing systems, it also provides full turnkey automa- tion systems including robots, transfer lines, conveyors, presses and bonders. Ken Dargatz, President of EMC2, says: “Scotchkote Pipe Liner 2400 is an outstanding solution for the trenchless pipe repair challenge. EMC2 has witnessed the exceptional technical talent, innovative culture and commitment that 3M has directed toward this activity and we feel privileged to have the opportunity to support them as they implement this technology worldwide.” EMC2 joins a number of

companies already authorised to manufacture application systems for the Scotchkote Liner 2400 system. These include Schur, which is located near Manchester in the UK, and Malley Industrie, based at New Brunswick in Canada. The Scotchkote Pipe

Renewal Liner 2400 is applied using a trenchless spin cast process that can efficiently coat existing infrastructure to restore internal pipe diam- eters, increase flow, improve efficiency, minimiser water loss and help prevent addi- tional corrosion and build-up of scale and tuberculation. The system offers a 10 minute set time and 60 minute cure followed by a 30 minute flush, allowing a water main to be returned to service within 90 minutes of lining. This is

claimed to reduce total cost, shorten construction sched- ules and minimise disruptions to water customers, traffic and local businesses. When applied at prescribed lining thickness and bury depths, Scotchkote Liner 2400 is said to meet the material properties of ASTM F1216-09 after 50 years. 3M says to ensure consist-

ency in product application procedures and product performance, Scotchkote liner 2400 is applied only by authorised applicators. To date, the system has been applied in ferrous, cement- mortar lined and asbestos cement pipes around the world, including the US, UK, Canada, Russia, Mexico, Australia, and Malaysia. ❙ www.3m.comwww.emcsquared.com
