FROM THE EDITOR I

Roll on the summer shoe shows!

’m just back from a very exciting show – the 84th edition of Expo Riva Schuh at Riva Del Garda, Italy.

It was great to be able to spend time at the show chatting to manufacturers, importers,

wholesalers and retailers from all over the world. As it is the first event of the Spring/Summer 2015 season, 7-8 weeks before Moda, it allows those who are sourcing footwear sufficient time to make a sample collection to sell on to their customers at the major European shoe events.

It also provides an opportunity to get together with old friends

and new from the footwear trade in a beautiful location, and gain information about which styles are selling well in other countries. My full review will follow in the August edition.

Talking about Trade Shows – are you attending Moda this Year?

In this edition John Saunders, CEO of the BFA, makes a plea to retailers to support the major UK trade shows. He maintains, quite rightly, that exhibitions also offer a rare opportunity to meet with brand owners, designers and directors - to discuss key business challenges with the people who make the final decisions.

If used properly the exhibition stand can provide valuable neutral

ground on which to discuss collections, plan promotions and agree a special deal that may not be on offer from your sales agent. And, as John Saunders says, to paraphrase Joni Mitchell - you often do not know what you’ve got until it’s gone!

In this edition we report back on the success of Northampton

University footwear students at Graduate Fashion Week. The 15 third year students took part in the catwalk show held at the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane in London’s East End on Monday 1st June and showcased their final year collections and accessories.

Former medical student Daniyal Khan showcased his range

of bespoke men’s bags and footwear and unveiled his glow in the dark leather concept, which he created and developed himself. Daniyal’s collection has been sponsored by Northampton-based Church’s Shoes.

Graduates from the University of Northampton have routinely

been recruited by the largest brands in the shoe industry with alumni working for brand names like Church’s, Jimmy Choo, Prada and Clarks. View some of the student’s amazing designs on pages 30-31 of this issue.
