the globe,” Cohen says. “We tailor the packaging size to the needs of growers around the world, which eliminates the waste of extra product in the field or sitting in their ware- houses. We look at how it’s going to be applied, what are the risks to applicators or the environment or neighboring farms and conduct an assessment to mitigate or eliminate those risks.” DuPont’s sustainability strategy also entails providing product education to growers
and distributors. Detailed information on application rates, personal protection equip- ment (PPE) and post- and pre-harvest intervals, to name a few, are included in marketing and training materials as well as on product labels. Still, the education doesn’t stop there. DuPont launched a Web-based monitoring system, Evalio®
Agrosystems, where grow-
ers input data on insect pests and DuPont locates infestations, alerts growers and proper product application is recommended. “From a sustainability standpoint, growers are given guidance on using products in just the
right amount,” says Joseph Szafran, global communications manager for DuPont Crop Protec- tion. The company hopes to expand the program to other regions.
ERA Recognizes Effort Above, Beyond The Norm The Environmental Respect Awards (ERA) is an outward expression of the company’s
focus on sustainability. “We are very proud of our internal stewardship program,” Cohen says. “But this is an
opportunity for us to look at our customers’ stewardship programs and let them know how proud we are of what they have accomplished and the successes they have.” It’s about raising the bar around the world and exchanging knowledge in the process,
Cohen explains. Being part of the ERA program is tremendously rewarding for Cohen and her team, in
particular, during the days leading up to the event when they spend time getting to know the winners, she said. “I see winners moved to tears when they accept their award,” Cohen says. “They say
how meaningful it is to them to be recognized for going above and beyond the norm and having good safety and stewardship programs.” Year after year, Cohen’s team is thank- ful for the lasting relationships that come as a result of the awards. “Many of the winners interact with our team long after the awards are over. It is truly a wonderful event and far surpasses expectations,” Cohen says. — Robin Siktberg
