COPERCANA PROMOTES FARMING THROUGH EDUCATION AND SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

T

HE COOPERATIVE OF CANE PLANTERS WEST OF SAO PAULO (Copercana) was founded in 1963 with the desire to unite the farm- ers of the region and to promote broader defense of their economic

interests. The mission is to meet the needs of the cooperative’s associ- ate members and clients by providing products and services that add value to their farming operations to ensure that the cooperative will develop in a sustainable way. Central to the cooperative’s approach is to value the people working

for the organization. This strengthens the community in which the coop- erative operates. Copercana complies with all labor regulations and provides associates incentives that enable them to develop their work in an efficient, ethical and responsible way. In addition, Copercana provides regular train-

ing to associates. Doing so ensures associates employ best practices to avoid accidents in the warehouses. Copercana is well known for the quality of its

products, and the organization works only with reliable suppliers of brands that have a high reputation in the market place. Evidence of these efforts can be found in the long-term contractual relationship established with the leading multina- tional suppliers. At Copercana, thinking about the environ-

ment means thinking about future generations. To ensure a high quality future, it’s necessary to

preserve the environment and invest in actions that create awareness among company associates and the community at large. Every month Copercana publishes “Revista Canavieiros,” a magazine distributed free to all the associ-

ates and to those involved in the sugarcane energy business. The magazine expresses messages about people who understand the important role agriculture plays in the community. Agriculture provides food, creates jobs, helps the economy and delivers environmental protection. Farmers who were once blamed for destroying the environment are now the people who work harder to preserve nature. Today, Copercana is a model rural cooperative that serves as a model not only for Brazil, but for the

world. It is a demonstration of strength and seriousness, which seeks the continuous technological evolution of Brazilian agribusiness. — Dan Jacobs
