He may have lost out to American Jordan Spieth at the Augusta Masters last month, but Rory McIlroy came ‘roaring’ back to claim his 10th U.S. PGA Tour win with victory at the World Golf Championships in San Francisco earlier this month. World number one McIlroy celebrated his 26th birthday by overcoming American Gary Woodland 4 & 2 in the final to win the title for the second time in his career. However, this victory came at a cost since McIlroy was forced to cancel his birthday plans to attend the Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao fight in Las Vegas, plans that would have entailed a return trip of 1140 miles by private jet, on the eve of the final. Only two other players have amassed 10 wins on the PGA Tour by the age of 26 – Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods – so the change of plan was not without some consolation for the Irishman. Slipping under the radar somewhat, were
the achievements of Sheffield’s Danny Willett who beat five players, including fellow Brit Lee Westwood, on his way to the semi-final, where he eventually lost to Woodland. To his credit, Willett put his disappointment behind him, and secured third place in the WGC by beating American and World number 5 Jim Furyk 3& 2, propelling him up to 38th in the World rankings. Mayweather won a points decision over fellow welterweight Manny Pacquiao, another confrontation threatened to make the headlines when 28 year old American Keegan Bradley, and his caddie Steve Hale, squared up to 51 year old Miguel Angel Jimenez in a disagreement over a referees ruling.
Aſter Jimenez told Bradley’s caddie to ‘shut
up’, since he was mimicking Jimenez’s accent, Bradley ran over to Jimenez and confronted him eyeball to eyeball, before telling the popular Spaniard ‘You don’t tell my caddie to shut up.’ This was an unseemly incident which had
fellow Spaniard rushing to his compatriot’s defence when he tweeted ‘What happened again with Keegan Bradley's caddy and Miguel Angel Jimenez? That guy (Bradley) loves getting in trouble with players.’ Still, I know who my money would have been on if things had got out of hand! Having mentioned in this column last
month that Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke could be using Steven Gerrard as a motivational speaker to fire up Europe’s golfers at next year’s Ryder Cup in Minnesota, it seems that there may also be contributions from Australian cricket legend Shane Warne, Rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall, Champions’ League winner Andriy Schevchenko, World boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya and Liverpool legends Robbie Fowler and Kenny Dalglish. So who might American Ryder Cup captain
Davis Love III turn to for inspiration? Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis or golf loving President Barack Obama who will be out of a job come September 2016? The mind boggles.
