Q and A with James Bawa, Chief Executive at Teachers Building Society James Bawa
here are many challenges facing teachers moving onto or up the property ladder:
shortage of housing, increasing house prices and contract employment to name a few. Here, James Bawa, Chief Executive of Teachers Building Society, explains that there is help at hand.
1. When was Teachers Building Society founded? Teachers Building Society was set up in 1966 by teachers to help education professionals get onto the property ladder. Now, nearly 50 years later, we have a wealth of knowledge on pay scales, working contracts and the mortgage needs of teachers.
2. How are you able to help teachers looking to buy their first home? Some teachers find it difficult to get a mortgage if they are newly qualified, so we can offer mortgages to Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) on a fixed term contract up to one month before they start their first post. We also offer a mortgage requiring just a 5% deposit for members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) buying their first home, and we support Help to Buy and Shared Ownership schemes.
3. What about educators who are already home-owners? We offer a range of products to cover a
teacher’s life-cycle, including a Back on Track mortgage for those who have experienced a financial glitch and a Later Years mortgage for teachers who are approaching retirement or are already retired. We also use an individual approach, assessing each application on a case- by-case basis.
4. How can teachers be sure that you have their best interests at heart? We are the only building society endorsed by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and we meet with NUT officials to keep up-to-date with the issues that education professionals face. We also have a teaching professional on our board of directors to ensure education remains at the heart of everything we do.
