Every week 12 young people die of sudden cardiac arrest
Install a defibrillator in your school W
ith every passing minute without a controlled shock the chances of survival decrease by 10%, which equates to almost no chance of
survival after 10 minutes. Their deaths are devastating and heart breaking. How can you help?
Having a defibrillator in your school’s first aid room or placed strategically around the school site will give your pupils the best chance of survival should they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest whilst at school. Automated defibrillators give clear instructions, both visually and audibly,
so that practically anyone is able to use these units and save lives. Although no training is required to use automated defibrillators it is advised to provide some training to staff in their use, giving staff more confidence. Safelincs offer a free training place with every defibrillator sold.

elta Security, the CCTV and access control specialist, has installed a new access control system in Oak Hill Theological College to protect
the college’s students, residents, employees and property. Installations include a Salto Access control system, including ID passes
and ad hoc printable passes, and new automatic electronic gates at the college entrance. Tim McMahon, Operations Vice Principal at Oak Hill Theological
College, says key to the new system was that the college had more information on access usage and greater control over what access was given to different parties. “Oak Hill is different to many educational establishments in that not
only do many of our students live at the college, but their families do too,” he says. “This means we have to accommodate access for young families and
teenagers, as well as employees and deliveries. A flexible access system was critical in order that we could strike the correct balance between user-friendly convenience and a high level of security. “I knew what I wanted to achieve and the Delta engineers have been
excellent in helping us to realise these goals,” he continues. “They are very knowledge of both the system and security in general. The gates, for example, are integrated with the fire alarm to open automatically in the event of an alarm activation to give access to the fire brigade. “We now have a system that
works as we want it to, and because it is IP-based it is future proof, so we are able to utilise additional capabilities as and when budgets allow.”

Amthal Fire & Securitymakes the grade at Verulam School V
erulam School has used Amthal Fire & Security to upgrade the security and fire safety measures across the school for the benefit of staff, pupils
and visitors. Based in St Albans, Verulam School is a secondary school for boys with
academy status. The specialist comprehensive school, which is larger than average for a secondary site, needed to upgrade all security and fire safety measures in line with latest fire regulations, to safeguard the school and ensure the safety of all who attend. The school consulted with Amthal Fire & Security to ensure a complete
site survey was conducted that looked at all aspects of safety and security, following which a works programme was established to install new solutions where necessary, working around dedicated learning timetables. Says Paul Hammond, Site Manager at Verulam School: “With the academy
status of the school, we needed to ensure the security and fire safety measures on site could accommodate not only the school use, but also the extra curricular activity and increasingly wider variety of visitors utilising our premises.
“Amthal Fire & Security partnered with us right from the initial design
process of the security and fire safety requirements through to creating a continuous programme of works planned around our budget, resource allocation and timeframes. In a competitive market, I was very lucky to find a company that truly put the school and my own thoughts first, listened to what I wanted and continue to deliver exactly what they said they would. The electronic security solution specified, incorporated state of the art IP
CCTV together with access control and automatic fire detection systems, all integrated into existing platforms. Most recently, Amthal Fire & Security has installed a new entry system for the school. Cont/d… Jamie Allam, Commercial Director of Amthal Fire & Security added: “The
Department for Education is faced with an estimated budget shortfall of £600 million in 2015-16, according to the Association of Colleges. Despite these financial constraints, it is essential that the safety and security of students, staff and the public is not compromised. “What our work with Verulam School demonstrates is the attention to
detail, in working closely with the site management team to create an upgrade programme that is scaleable to fit within the budget, timescales and resource available, especially careful not to disturb learning timetables. This way more cost effective measures can be taken provide the necessary peace of mind for staff, pupils and visitors at all times.” Independently owned, Amthal Fire & Security is dedicated to satisfying end
user needs for security safety and convenience offering design, installation, service and remote monitoring of advanced electronic fire & security solutions, including intruder, Fire, Access and CCTV systems. Amthal Fire & Security is accredited by the Security Systems and Alarm
Inspection Board (SSAIB) United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS) and British Approvals for Fire Equipment (BAFE.)
