Innovative Education Packs Bring Learning to Life T
hree years ago, Bambi Gardiner struggled to find textbooks for her 13 year old dyslexic daughter – so, with the help of teachers and the LS department
at Hurstpierpoint College, she created her own. Her company, Oaka Books, now publishes a growing range of titles for visual learners aged 5-14 years and supplies over 250 schools. Bambi says ‘Our daughter couldn’t cope with lots of text. But from year 3
onwards, she had to work from the same textbooks as fluent readers. It didn’t work and she quickly fell behind. This is an issue for many pupils.’ Eventually, Bambi decided to turn her daughter’s work into cartoon-style
notes, using vibrant design and activities. ‘It was a ‘game changer’’, Bambi says. ‘Her grades went from Es and Fs to her
first A. More importantly, she gained self-belief.’ Bambi says, ‘Oaka packs are different from standard textbooks; they are full
of images and colour. They are topic based, short and concise, using bullet points and easy to understand words and sentences. All text is in 14pt Comic Sans font and is printed on a pale blue or yellow background. A Write Your Own Notes booklet and learning game means key points are reinforced in an engaging way.’ Oaka Topic Packs help children who struggle with reading or processing but
need to access the curriculum. Packs are available for Sciences, Geography, History and French. Oaka packs were short listed for the 2015 Education Resources Award. Topic packs are available from
