21 prior to leaving for the Changwon World Cup, earned her berth on the other two World Cup teams by virtue of her cumulative finishes in the Winter and Spring Selection matches. “Shooting that 591 in
Winter Selection was a personal best for me,” she said. “I was super excited to have that score. In each position, I had shot those kinds of scores before, but never at the same time so
it was awesome to have it work out that day. I’ve been trying to get that to happen more frequently!” Now a college junior, Black didn’t even know if she’d be shooting in a col- legiate rifle program, but as her showings at these Se- lection Matches seem to be confirming – she’s good at pulling out a strong perfor- mance when it counts. “It wasn’t until the mid-
dle of my senior year, I had just been plugging along,” she said. “I wanted to shoot in college, but my scores weren’t quite there yet. My
goal was to eventually make a college team so my scores jumped in November of my senior year at the Dixie Double, then at the Olym- pic Trials after that. The Olympic Trials in February was where Karen (Monez, Black’s coach at TCU) talked to me and got me to come to TCU. It was kind of late in the game, but that’s where it all started. Didn’t have a plan of where to go, didn’t really think about it, people would say to look at schools and I just kind of waited it out and it turned out working out really well. I
love being at TCU, I love the campus, the athletic depart- ment, but at the time, I wasn’t sure and didn’t really have any plans.”
Black is majoring in
Sports Psychology and hopes to eventually go to school to work as a Physical Therapist.
“I really like anatomy and the physiology stuff, just how the body works,” she said. “It came naturally at first, and I don’t have to write crazy long papers too often!” she laughted. “I just like hands-on stuff.”
