STEDINGH Derek Stedingh, a


talented skater and pil- lar in the Alaska skating community, died Dec. 22, 2014, in Anchorage, Alaska. He was 41. Derek was born on


Feb. 9, 1973, to Kurt W. and Carol Ann (Brown) Stedingh in Anchor- age, Alaska. He attended Service High School and then was home-schooled by his parents the last two years, receiving a state diploma. Derek worked for Northern Slope Telecom from Febru- ary 2012 to August 2013, and then for Westower Communication until December of 2013. He was

a member of the Chapel of the Cross Church. A longtime Anchorage resident, Derek was


an extremely talented and competent athlete. He played soccer, competed in track and field, was a figure skater, ice dancer, mountain biker and mountaineer. He competed at the U.S. Championships at


the novice, junior and senior levels. His parents, particularly his mother, was in-


strumental in founding the Alaska Association of Figure Skaters Club in Anchorage (AAFS). His athletic endeavors required him to travel to var- ious competitions throughout the Yukon Territo- ry, Canada, the United States and Europe. Derek liked to hunt and fish, was an avid mountaineer and generally liked being in the outdoors. He was an extremely social and compatible person, who


enjoyed the companionship of his many friends. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. Derek is survived by his grandparents, Kurt


W. and Veronica J. Stedingh of Voorhees, N.J.; par- ents, Kurt W. Stedingh Jr. and Carol A. Stedingh of Anchorage, Alaska; brother and sister in-law, Donald M. and Carolyn Stedingh of Anchorage; nephew, Dakota Stedingh of Anchorage; and nieces, Mycla, Cheyenne and Autumn Stedingh all of Anchorage.
