China hosted the World Figure
Skating Championships for the first time, welcoming more than 160 competitors to Shanghai, its eastern metropolis on the Yangtze River, that seamlessly blends ancient tradition with glittering, high-tech architec- ture. Events were held at the state-of-
the-art Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, built on an artificial lake in 2010. With seating capacity of 18,000, several events were sold out, and an estimated 120,000 fans passed through ticket gates.
