Eileen Currie, vice president of Commercial Lines, recently spoke with us about why commercial driver selection and training are so important—and how Arbella can help your clients make the best choice in drivers for their fleet.


What are the benefits of helping commercial clients improve their driver selection process? As the economy continues to improve, selecting the right driver remains critically important, but it’s also getting more difficult. The decrease in unemployment means that good drivers will be harder to come by for your clients who have driver fleets. Helping your clients develop a comprehensive driver selection and training program will prevent losses and reduce their premium.


How should I advise my clients regarding driver selection and training? It’s important for your insureds to understand that driver selection is a multi-step process, and that properly selecting a driver will reduce the potential for accidents and minimize their company’s liability from its vehicle operations. They should become familiar with state and federal rules involving hiring and should require a Motor Vehicle Record, reference and background checks, road test, medical certificate, and driver’s license verification, in addition to a standard applica- tion and interview.
