RBS: Slash and offshore jobs plan
Unite is challenging the taxpayer-backed Royal Bank of Scotland over the impact of cutting 160 staff from 54 locations and the justification for offshoring the processing part of this work to India. The announce- ment was made in January.
“Experienced and skilled staff which service the business customer relations teams will today be devastated by news that their jobs could be lost,” said Unite national officer Rob Macgregor.
“These roles are vital to the service business customers enjoy with local support teams and Unite has a real concern that such a loss will be detrimental to customer service.”

TTIP
End NHS threats call
Unite general secretary Len McCluskey wrote to EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom in January, condemning the way the Commission has mislead the British public over the issue of EU-US trade deal TTIP and whether the NHS will be affected.
Unite believes Commission officials have been giving off-the-record briefings to the UK media, giving the impression that the NHS is exempt from the trade deal.
But as Len McCluskey noted in his letter, the only one way to ensure the NHS doesn’t fall within the scope of the deal is for prime minister David Cameron to use his veto power to explicitly exempt the NHS.
“I don’t know whether the Commission is trying to mislead the British public on this issue but that certainly seems to be what is happening,” wrote Len. “Unite’s legal advice is clear,” he added. “The NHS is included within the material scope of TTIP.”
He also reminded the Commissioner that she has previously stated the UK government can comprehensively remove all aspects of the NHS from TTIP.
There is no evidence that David Cameron has made the decision necessary to end threats posed to the NHS by TTIP. But numerous independent polls conducted for Unite have shown massive opposition to the EU-US trade deal, especially in light of its threats to the NHS. Unite believes it’s time David Cameron listened.
NHS PAY
NHSstaff pay
NHS pay strike action was suspended in January following a pay offer which Unite members have been consulted over. As we go to press the consultation results were just in and were extremely close.
“The very close nature of the vote reflects our members continuing concern over the pay issue in the NHS,” said Unite national officer, Barrie Brown.

“Unite will be discussing these implications with our fellow health unions and also raising them with the NHS Pay Review Body when it starts taking evidence for the next pay round.
“At all times, we will be listening to our dedicated health service members and mirroring their concerns to find the best way to enhance their pay and conditions.”
