The Independent Voice Congratulations to 43 year old Irishman

Padraig Harrington on winning the Honda Classic earlier this month – his first title win on either the PGA or European Tour for seven years. And what makes this win even more special for Harrington is that he saw off the challenge of a man less than half his age! Going into the tournament ranked

297th in the world, his victory on the second extra hole in a two way play off with American Daniel Berger, means that Harrington now qualifies for the US Masters at Augusta next month, having missed out last year for the first time since 2000. It also means that Harrington is catapulted back up the rankings to 82nd place. Throw in the winner’s cheque for $1.08million, and it’s not a bad few days’ work! Congratulations also to Northern

Ireland’s Darren Clarke who has been elected to captain the European Team in the 2016 Ryder Cup. The 46 year old was chosen ahead of Miguel Angel Jimenez and Thomas Bjorn. Meanwhile, across the pond, America’s

Ryder Cup Task Force has caused more than a few eyebrows to be raised by appointing Davis Love III to captain its team for the second time, having already led the USA to defeat at Medinah in 2012. His selection came as quite a surprise since there had been significant support for Paul Azinger to assume the captain’s role for a second time, having led the Americans to Ryder Cup victory in 2008, not least of all from Phil Mickelson who

publicly castigated Tom Watson, the USA captain in 2014, for not following the blueprint for success laid down by Azinger six years previous. Tip for Davis Love III? Watch your back

son! Princess Anne, who once said that she

would ‘rather take the dogs out than play golf’, was recently named as one of seven women who have become the first female members of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club, St. Andrews, thus ending two hundred and sixty years of male dominance at the R & A. The Princess Royal joins the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of York and the Duke of Kent as honorary members. Fortunately for the game of golf, the other six named have all played the game at the highest level and include Laura Davies and Annika Sorenstam. Following hard on the heels of this

ground breaking decision came another revelation when the R & A announced it was in talks with the St. Andrews based Ladies Golf Union over the possibility of ‘developing closer working ties and a possible merger.’ Harry Vardon and Tom Morris must be turning in their graves!

Happy Hacking! Mulligan
