I had been using a Graphite Design Tour AD DI 6S (as used previously by Tiger and currently by Martin Kaymer) and whilst I got on with it well, I had a few nagging doubts… So I called the guys at UST and asked them if

asked me if I had considered the ‘Chrome’… I hadn’t – not only that, I wasn’t aware of it! They kindly offered to send me one down as well as the ‘Fire’ shaſt and – wow!

I was instantly impressed by this shaft – the

feedback it gives at all parts of the swing, the ease with which it launches the ball, the ball flight it promotes and the distance it creates. UST Mamiya claim it is their most

When it arrived I was firstly struck by the

colour scheme. Much more understated than it’s siblings, Earth, Fire and Wind, which dazzle with very loud graphics, the ‘Chrome’ is white at the butt end tapering to a simple silver for the majority of the shaft down to the tip – very classy! When trimmed to spec and fitted into my Titleist it looked nothing short of gorgeous. Having warmed up with the shorter clubs I

began practice swings with the driver and was immediately struck by the balance and feel of the shaft. Balance and smoothness throughout the swing was excellent at all points. Beginning to hit, I had the head set to 8.75 loft and neutral – launch angle was in the mid to low range but the loft achieved was astounding, the ball just keeping on climbing. I have used the same range to practice for the last 15 years, so was used to where drives usually land – this was considerably longer, possibly 10-15 yards. The shaft also seems to promote a right to left flight, but equally it was easy for me to manufacture a fade. Dispersion was excellent, as was the feel of the strike through the shaft.

technically advanced shaft to date. It is the first ‘driver’ or ‘wood’ shaft they have made which incorporates their ‘Recoil’ technology which is said to encourage the most efficient energy transfer between butt and tip which may explain why it feels so different from other graphite shafts. It also utilises variable wall thickness to promote enhanced feel, better control and accuracy.

Verdict I may very well change the head of my

driver to the latest Titleist 915 but I wont be changing the shaft unless UST Mamiya come up with something better; which I have to say on the evidence is a very tall order. With the Elements ‘Chrome’ they have set

the bar very high indeed. This is a shaft which gives its all and doesn’t disappoint. It would be a worthy addition to any golfer’s bag, and a product pros would be well advised to consider if asked by members to give advice on shaft upgrades. A winner in every way.
