As Chair of the Senate Natural Resources & Parks Committee, Sen. CA WASHINGTON AND CCA OREGON submitted a joint letter concerning the management of
Lower Columbia River sturgeon that focuses on the overall health of this important sturgeon population. CCA believes that greater attention
must be given to the impact of non-stur- geon fisheries on the oversized, spawning population. Unfortunately, the handling of spawner-sized sturgeon has recently increased due to the extensive gillnet fish- ery targeting fall Chinook. Based on a bycatch observation study, an estimated 660 spawner-size sturgeon were ensnared in 2012, 1,063 were unnecessarily handled in 2013, and 1,137 were handled as by - catch in 2014. In order to protect this critically impor-
tant spawning population, CCA strongly recommends that managers fast track the removal of gillnets from the Lower Columbia River in order to drastically reduce sturgeon bycatch.

the Wild Fish Conservancy on the spot regarding the litiga- tion, the settlement, and the legal threat facing our salmon and steelhead hatcheries. Sen. Pearson has pledged to continue tracking this issue to secure needed reforms. “Protecting our waters so
that future generations can enjoy them is vital for our state’s economy and quality of life. Our state’s fisheries create jobs, generate revenue for our communities and state coffers and, perhaps most importantly, help make Washington the great family recreational treasure it is,” said Sen. Pearson.
