Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation needs you
The Center for Sportfish Science
and Conservation has surgically im - planted several redfish with tracking technology as part of the Cedar Bayou study. Each of the fish is marked with a green external dart tag. Anglers are encouraged to release these fish if caught and call the phone number on the tag to let researchers know where it was caught in order to add valuable move- ment information to the study. If anglers decide to keep a tagged fish or if the fish dies in the process of being caught, anglers are requested to keep the black cylindrical acoustic tag implanted in the fish and call 361-825-2028. This research is heavily dependent on the cooperation of local anglers, and your support is greatly appreciated.
Habitat projects update The Bird Island Cove Marsh
Restor ation Project, to which CCA Texas has contributed $50,000, is nearing
completion. The project will protect approximately 114 acres of existing coastal wetlands through both the construction of a breakwater, which will shield them from continued erosion, as well as the restoration of approx imately 70 acres of estuarine marsh complex. Phase 1 of the Oyster Lake Shore -
line Stabilization Project was complet- ed last year and monitoring indicates the project is doing very well. CCA Texas has contributed $200,000 to this project, which will eventually protect
up to 5,200 linear feet of shoreline from future erosion by installing hard structure breakwaters (reef balls) that will reduce wave and wind energy affecting the shorelines. Where eleva- tions are suitable, emergent marsh will be replanted using cultivated plants. This process will help restore and improve marsh functions, including habitat and feeding grounds for fish and wading birds. The Galveston Bay Foundation will be bidding on Phase 2 in the near future, with construction slated to begin in the latter part of 2015.
