USWCA NEWS It’s all about family By Jeannie Borland, USWCA President

port and help us grow, I would like to acknowl- edge those important people in my life. First, I was tickled when my sister, Edieann,

told me about curling. It sounded so quirky and her curling tales always made me smile. Ten when I met Robb I gained more curling fam- ily. What fun it was to watch the joy of his par- ents when brother Andy and sister Jean became Mixed National champions! I was really hooked on curling when Robb, Edieann, her husband Jim, and I won the End-of Year Bonspiel at Bowl- ing Green – it was my first time curling. Later my daughter, Kelly, and son-in-law, Mike, were able to curl with us and tend the bar at the Summer Spiel. A favorite memory hap- pened at the Bowling Green Christmas bonspiel when we shared a curling experience with Jean, her husband Steve, Kelly, Mike, my son Darren and his wife, Nisreen, who grew up in Damascus, Syria, with no ice! We ended that family event with the men against the women, and guess who won? Lately, I was thrilled to introduce our granddaughter, Sydney, and grand- son, Tyler, to my favorite sport. When they didn’t want to stop to eat, I knew the family tradition would continue. Some of my curling club friends have become like family. At Bowling

Borland

Green I had the best times with Joan Freeman, Sharon Gargasz and Martha Mazzarella. We traveled all over the country sharing good times, sad times and family stories. Ed and Mary Glowacki introduced us to long bike rides, hearty meals and stimulating conversations. Joann Hipp, Kathy Haswell, Kathy Kananen, and Pat Zollars still invite me to their summer tea parties. Te common bond of curling has created an enduring family. Now that we have moved across the state and curl at Mayfield Curling

Club, our curling family has grown and our lives are enriched. I could never have held this office without the support of loyal , talented friends like Mary Jane Maisonville, Cheryl Drake, Anne Vanic, Leslie Cooke and countless other fabulous Mayfield curlers. We have spent more time with our May- field family than with our relatives, especially during curling season, and we’ve loved every minute. Tis year, for sure, my USWCA family has figured prominently in my

life. My first committee at the national level was the Five-Year-and-Under Bonspiel Committee chaired by Peggy Rotton. She gave me lots of insight into the workings of the USWCA and helped me become more involved. When I became chairwoman of that committee I worked with some hard working members like Michele Kornaus from Portage Curling Club. I met ladies all over the country by phone and e-mail while lining up sites for the Five-Year-and-Under events. It’s surprising how close I felt to them aſter long conversations and discussions. When I became the Senior Bonspiel Procedure chairwoman, I met a whole new group of women. It felt like a whole family of “senior women.” My closest sisters are the 15 women I be- came part of on the 2006 Senior Friendship Tour to Manitoba, Canada. he joy of curling for me includes families – my personal family, my curling club family and my United States Women’s Curling Association (USWCA) family. Because families give us love, sup-

ment. My Green Team mates – Nancy Wilhelm, Carolyn MacLeod and Debbie Sather – spent quality time together on and off the ice. What a great time we had on the “party bus” together and checking out the sights! Tis happy family recently held a reunion in Las Vegas where the majority of us were able to attend. It’s always like we’ve never been apart when we get back together again. Since being elected second vice president and moving up the chain of

leadership, my family has grown again. Te dedicated officers and com- mittee chairs of our organization have inspired and advised me these past three years. Like any families there are times when we have differences of opinion but

unlike some families we’ve never come to blows. Tis family of smart wom- en are able to reason things out, create solutions, and move on to grow our sport and organization. I’m proud to announce that we are indeed growing and welcome our new member clubs. Tey are: Bucks County (Pa.) Curl- ing Club; Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Curling Club; and Circle City (Ind.) Curling Club. Welcome back to the Chisholm (Minn.) Curling Club and the Fargo- Moorhead (N.D.) Curling Club. By this time next year we feel we’ll have more new family members to announce. Families come in all shapes and sizes. I’ve been so lucky to have such

wonderful families. My curling families provide me with all the love and support anyone could want. Families are forever. Te United States Women’s Curling Association: Te Heart of Curling –
