Sanctuary unaffected
T
he status of Francisco Agu- irre, the native El Salva- doran receiving sanctuary
at Augustana Lutheran Church in Portland, Ore. (December, page 36), was unaffected by Presi- dent Barack Obama’s executive order in November regarding immigration. “If you’ve got a criminal
record, it doesn’t apply,” said Mark Knutson, pastor of Augustana. In July 1999, Aquirre pleaded
no contest to two counts of deliv- ery of a controlled substance, though he has maintained his innocence. In the U.S. illegally, he was deported but soon returned to Portland, where he has become a well-known community orga- nizer and activist. He took sanctuary at Augus-
tana in September 2014 after a DUI arrest landed him on the radar of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Aguirre has two children who
are U.S. citizens. He has a visa application pending and is sched- uled to appear in federal court Jan. 13 in his illegal re-entry case.

BILL RADATZ
A first for First Lutheran As part of his ministry at First Lutheran Church in San Diego, Wilbert Miller, pastor, has done many funerals for homeless people. But recently he had the joy of offi ciating at a wedding. On Nov. 21, during breakfast that the downtown church serves to 200 people in need, Miller presided at the wedding of Sade “Artemis” Williams and Ronald Barry. Miller’s wife, Dagmar, made the bride’s bouquet and members Dale Cleland and Dorothy Hunter baked the cake.
