High voltage feedthroughs Morgan Advanced Materials now offers high- voltage ceramic-to-metal feedthroughs capable of performing with voltages in excess of 100kV DC, while also withstanding pressures of up to 1,700 bar (25,000 psi). The development comes in response to increased demand for higher-specification products from sectors including medical diagnostics. Based around Morgan’s Deranox 970 high dielectric strength ceramic, each product is designed and manufactured to customer requirements. Yannick Galais of Morgan explained, “Drawing on their experience in the design of ceramic-to-metal brazed assemblies, our team of engineers work with customers from the outset to develop a fully integrated, optimised solution based on our proven range of ceramic materials, metallisation inks, high-temperature glazes and braze alloys. Materials are carefully selected and integrated into a design which will minimise the impact of the ‘corona’ effect and deliver reliable long-term performance in the most demanding conditions.” Applications include anode and cathode connectors in X-ray, scanning and diagnostic equipment.

Contract manufacturing to increase

Medical device components manufacturer Filtertek Ireland, an ITW Medical company, is expanding its operations in Newcastle West, County Limerick. It is adding 35 new manufacturing roles over the next five years, bringing total employment to nearly 100 people. The expansion is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland. Filtertek Ireland specialises in plastic insert moulded filtration and flow

control components. Principal products are anti-reflux and anti-siphon check valves used in IVs for drug infusion, kidney dialysis and blood

transfusion sets. This expansion supports the design, development and production of new medical components and finished devices. Filtertek Ireland Tel. +353 69 62666, www.filtertek.com

Sintered porous plastics

Porvair Filtration Group offers a range of sintered porous plastic materials that can be employed in a range of functions across the medical sector. BioVyon materials are used in applications such as vents used in fluid collection vessels, IV catheters and a variety of syringe and pipette applications and supports.

Recent advances to the

BioVyon range, by chemically modifying the surfaces of these porous materials, have led to the development of advanced new products. For example, utilising BioVyon material to which Protein A or Protein G has been chemically bound, the company has developed Chromatrap, which is a novel chromatin immunoprecipitation assay that captures antibody-tagged DNA-protein complexes associated with cancers. These materials exhibit very low particle shedding, low extractables and low bioburden.

In addition, the high performance filtration and separation technology company has ISO Class 8 (class 100,000) clean rooms for full or part product assembly. Its Market Manager Roy Rigby said, “Having a strong understanding of industry standards, Porvair is seen as a good partner for customers either developing new or existing products where porous materials are used. We’re confident that they are helping to set new standards while aiding organisations in meeting their regulatory obligations.”

Accutronics is launching its new range of batteries at Compamed in Dusseldorf this November. The CMX series reportedly brings together high voltage, high power and smart battery functionality in a package that exceeds the strict regulatory requirements for batteries used in medical devices, according to Rob Phillips, the company’s Managing Director. Its previous products include a credit card sized battery for handheld portable medical devices and a multi-battery system for powering medical carts. All are part of the customisable Entellion range, which also offers algorithmic security to prevent the use of unauthorised, copycat batteries.
