pre-launch testing with focus groups and then refinement, and pivot if the test results tell you to change, but don’t discard what appears to be working well.
Taking advice
The opportunities for invention and innovation in the health, beauty and wellness industry are enormous; the route to market, however, is strewn with diversions, distractions and dead ends. Common mistakes and misconceptions abound. Science alone is not enough. Is there really a need? How much will the customer value the difference in your product? Is it sustainable, especially in terms of the intellectual property and potential infringements? The inventor is not expected to be an expert in everything and the obvious benefi ts of seeking advice and working in collaboration can be seen in the products that make it to market.
The innovation hub, MediCity is now home to more than 24 new and
growing companies in the medical devices, digital health technology, beauty and nutrition sectors. They are supported onsite by relevant professional services companies as well as a network of business mentors. Combined with access to Boots UK product development and innovation team, this allows MediCity-based companies to avoid many of the pitfalls experienced by those who try to go it alone. The truth is, to remain world class, major corporations such as Boots UK need innovation and innovators as much as the innovators need its business support and input. This high level of cooperation and shared objectives provide the perfect platform for the emergence of the next generation of products we are all going to want.
