ON THE JOB Amy Sandquist

Pursuing a Master of Social Work degree at Loyola INTERNSHIP WITH

NORTHWEST COMPASS HARDSHIP INTERVENTION AND REFERRAL DEPARTMENT

Why did you choose this internship? • It seemed like the experience would offer me a generalist perspective of social work prac- tice. I wanted experience in case manage- ment and working one-on-one with clients. And I did get that experience.

What were you doing? • I did case man- agement for two housing programs. One was a transitional living program, and one was a rental assistance program. Then I did intake as well, meaning that clients would come to the agency with questions or to see which programs would meet their needs, and I would conduct solution-focused inter- views, which helped clients assess their past successes and move forward by drawing from their personal strengths.

Was it a valuable experience? • It was awesome. I feel like I grew so much as a social worker and a person. I know that sounds corny, but this experience helped me understand my identity as a social worker—my professional identity was solidified. Part of what made the experience so powerful was the staff. They were so kind and such great teachers. It was a really great learning experience for me.

From supervisor Jessica Elwe (MSW ‘13) • “Amy made the most of her experience. She always went above and beyond. She was proactive and empathetic with clients. Loyola interns come in prepared—the fieldwork that Loyola has them do really does prepare them to go into a real world setting.”
