Optimise your pension pot for a prosperous future

F

rom April 2015 there will be free and impartial face-to-face guidance on your choices at retirement and you’ll also have

more options — you’ll be able to access and use your pension pot in any way you wish aſter the age of 55, taking a quarter tax-free, then paying income tax at your highest rate on the rest.

Pension review: Evaluate your pension performance twice a year — not

just when

you receive your annual statement. Don’t just look at investment performance — try to reduce

your pension charges, perhaps

by consolidating all your pensions into one easier to manage pension. A SIPP can be a good way to bring different pensions you already have into one place and may produce better returns.

Alternative investments: Low rates

for savings accounts are leading some people to make investments in antiques and fine arts. Make sure that you like the item (just in case it ends up sitting in your home) and try and choose something rare. Take measures against buying a fake — go to a dealer that is a member of the British Antique Dealers’ Association (Bada) or the Association of Art & Antiques Dealers (Lapada). Finally, remember to insure it.

ISAs: Te new Super Isa means not only can you invest £15,000 per year but you can transfer money between cash and investments. Te allowance for under-16s with Junior Isas has also increased from £3,720 to £4,000, while those aged 16 to 18 will be able to use the full £15,000 allowance, although only with cash.

Green & ethical savings: Consider crowdfunding as an option. Trillion Fund enables people to lend directly to renewable energy projects from £50, in return for returns of around 3-9% but there’s a whole range of projects seeking funding from investors.

The Good life recommends:

• Ecclesiastical Investment Management Limited: Tis successful company with strong ethical values has been at the forefront of socially responsible investing. Head of Investments Sue Round launched one of the UK’s first retail ethical investment funds, the Amity UK Fund, over 20 years ago and the company now offers a full range of socially responsible Amity- screened funds to give you the opportunity to diversify across asset classes and regions. www.ecclesiastical.com/investments

• Equity Release Supermarket: Te company was formed in 2008 and provides a nationwide advisory service via its team of experienced independent equity release advisers. Equity Release Supermarket is fully regulated by the FCA and also a proud member

of the Equity Release Council.

Visit our comprehensive website for further information on our full range of products. www.equityreleasesupermarket.co.uk

• The Social Investment Consultancy: When it comes to philanthropy, an increasing number of donors are finding themselves frustrated that the problems which they wish to solve continue to persist. Philanthropists have been looking for more and more ‘effective’ and ‘efficient’ charities to provide valuable resource but this has driven them away from innovation — away from fulfilling the very role that world needs them to fulfil. Te Social Investment Consultancy is working with high net worth individuals who are looking to donate £50,000 to £5m to help them better understand social change and to find ‘high risk’ opportunities that could lead to increased reward and the creation of a true legacy. www.tsiconsultancy.com
