STILL GOING STRONG F

WHEN IT COMES TO STAYING RELEVANT, BOAT SHOWS ARE THE KINGS, AND THE LIDO BOAT SHOW IS WELL INTO ITS FOURTH DECADE.

OR 36 YEARS, the Lido Boat Show has taken up residence in Newport Harbor, offering attendees a chance to see many of the biggest

and best yachts on the West Coast. This year, the West’s biggest fall boat show returns to Lido Marina Village for a four-day run of boats, equipment, gear and accessories. From Sept. 18–21, visitors to the northwest tip of the harbor will find trawlers, sportfishers, cruisers, catamarans, tugs, sailboats and more — about 200 boats to scrutinize and consider. While the way boats are built, marketed, and

bought and sold has changed over the course of the last 36 years, boat shows themselves have

Debuts While several new boats will be on display at the show, two of

them will be debuting. The MC4 from Monte Carlo will make its North American debut at Lido, showing off its 45 feet of European styling and Monte Carlo design. Taking advantage of IPS engines and pods, designers created room for two master-worthy staterooms below, one of them a full-beam amidships retreat. A flybridge with two social spaces really makes the MC4 a great “outdoors” boat, since there’s also a spacious cockpit and two large sunpads on the bow. To get a hint of what the MC4 offers, read our sea trial of its sister boat, the MC5, on page 42 from September Sea. Making its world debut at Lido is the Hinckley

Talaria 43, an express cruiser or dayboat that happens to run at 34 knots, thanks to twin Cummins QSB 550 diesels and a pair of Hamilton waterjets. The signature feature on the Talaria 43 is the aft enclosure — glass windows and a sliding door that electrically retract into the port and starboard cabinetry, opening up the main deck from helm to transom. They’ll be there. Will you?

remained steadfast, though their technical quotient has gone up, too — apps for attendees, iPads in the hands of brokers for on-the-spot presentations, flat-screen TVs in the boats running builder- produced videos on an endless loop. Boat shows still offer the best way for the boat-buying public to engage in expansive research in one location. To find out why boat shows — and the Lido

show in particular — are still an important part of brokerages’ sales efforts, we asked people at a couple of the longest-running Lido exhibitors: Stan Miller Yachts and Chuck Hovey Yachts, both of which have been there since the beginning.
