EXHIBITION PREVIEWS
RWM UNVEILS NEW PROGRAMME FOR 2014
T
his September, RWM in partnership with CIWM will showcase the latest waste management developments and offer public sector professionals the chance to forge new connections with peers. The NEC in Birmingham will again host Europe’s leading resource efficiency and waste management event, which is free to attend and runs from 16 to 18 September (register at
www.rwmexhibition.com).
NEW CIRCULAR ECONOMY CONNECT EVENT Premiering this year, Circular Economy Connect will provide businesses with vital tools to develop their sustainability and closed loop strategy. Building on RWM customer feedback, Circular Economy Connect has been introduced to provide a targeted event where visitors can network, share ideas and find new resource management solutions as they work towards a more circular economy. Sir Stuart Rose is one of more than 40 speakers in the Circular Economy Connect theatre. Focusing on collaboration, he will discuss the best ways to communicate the full potential of the circular economy to members of the board and how to engage with all organisational roles to gain a broader picture of how sustainability works in practice. He is expected to highlight how the linear model is out-dated and that sustainable business is the future. Other speakers in the new theatre include pioneering environmentalist Walter Stahel, who coined the term ‘circular economy’ and is widely regarded as one of the world’s most eminent leaders on the topic. Nigel Marsh, global head of environment at Rolls Royce, James Walker, group head of innovation at Kingfisher and Lars Lundquist, packaging environmental sustainability expert at Nestlé are also speaking in the new CEC Theatre.
FREE RWM CONFERENCE PROGRAMME This year’s free, CPD-accredited conference programme has been developed
through peer-reviewed research and consultation with industry bodies such as CIWM. The line up will feature over 200 resource efficiency and waste management experts speaking in more than 70 seminars across three theatres.
Rt. Hon Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government will deliver the Ministerial Keynote in the Local Authority Theatre on Wednesday 17 September. This theatre, one of three in RWM’s free to attend, CPD accredited conference programme, will provide advice and first hand experience from both government and industry leaders. Tackling councils’ waste needs, discussions will include best-practice case studies, TEEP guidelines and targeting recycling engagement. This is of particular relevance to councils following the European Commission’s new 70% recycling targets by 2030 announced in early July. The panel discussion on guaranteeing a higher quality recyclate will be moderated by Ray Georgeson, CEO of the Resource Association. He will be joined by Jonathan Short, founder of ECO Plastics, Dr Benjamin Eule, global technical manager at Stadler and Keith Kondakor, leader of the Green Group, Warwickshire County Council plus senior representative on the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB). The panel will debate the importance of stringent frameworks, safeguarding traceability of materials and exploring successes and challenges in achieving high quality recycling.
Case studies providing best practice will support professionals from local authorities who want to raise their recycling levels rapidly. In a remarkable case study, Rachel Jowitt, head of waste and street services at Monmouthshire County Council will explore how in 2013, Wales reached its statutory target of recycling 52% of waste collected. Another panel discussion, moderated by Durk Reyner, vice-chair and policy officer at LARAC tackles the question – “If waste really is a ‘resource’ how much money is this resource generating for your council?” He
will be joined on stage by Nicholas Daubney, leader of the council and portfolio holder for resources, King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, Frank Smith, strategic director, South London Waste Partnership and Chris Jones, waste policy and climate change, Staffordshire Council.
Other leading industry speakers include
David Palmer-Jones, Chairman at ESA, Dr Liz Goodwin, Chief Executive Officer at WRAP and Andy Rees, Head of Waste Strategy in the Welsh Government. Phil Barton, chief executive, Keep Britain Tidy, councillor Nick Naylor, environment cabinet member for South Bucks District Council and Tommy Wallace, director of fleet and waste management at Birmingham City Council will also speak in the theatre. The popular Energy from Waste Theatre also returns this year.
