STANDARDS IN SUPPORT OF ENERGY SAVINGS OPPORTUNITY SCHEME (ESOS)

On 26 June the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) launched its Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) which mandates large organizations to undertake an energy audit. The government has estimated that approximately 7,300 UK organizations will be affected by ESOS. Organizations will have until 5 December 2015 to comply by either undertaking an energy audit or by carrying out specified energy savings activities outlined by Government. One recognized route to compliance is to have implemented and be certified to BS EN ISO 50001 which will be considered as having met the scheme requirements. Government guidance also puts forward BS EN 16247-1 Energy audits as a standard that will help organizations feel reassured that any energy audit undertaken is directed by good practice. Energy professionals who want to carry out energy audits will have to register under the new ESOS scheme as ‘lead auditors’. Auditor competency requirements are outlined in BSI’s new PAS 51215:2014, Energy efficiency assessment. Competency of a lead energy assessor. Specification.

ISO 14001 REVISION – UPDATE Draft standard just published

A significant revision to the world’s most widely-used environmental management standard, ISO 14001, is well underway to bring it up-to-date with key concepts and future challenges of environmental management. A draft of the revised standard has just been published and is now available from BSI. Free seminars

BSI is hosting a series of free regional seminars over the coming months to help guide ISO 14001 users through the changes. Revision video We have recently produced a new video which explains the background to the revision, what it will mean for existing ISO 14001 users and how to manage the transition when the new standard is published in 2015. White Paper

Our new ISO 14001 White Paper gives an overview of how the standard has been developed over the years, details the benefits it can bring to organizations, and covers how the changes in 2015 will affect organizations.

UK EXPERT GETS ON POWER LIST Anne-Marie Warris, the chair of the ISO sub-committee and the ISO joint task coordination group - one of the key drivers behind the ISO 14001 revision - has been voted onto the Environmentalist’s most influential people in sustainability, Power List. Anne, who has MIEMA, CEnv and Fellow of the Energy Institute credentials, took the third spot behind Liz Goodwin and Sir David Attenborough.

MONITORING TEXTILE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS Together with leading experts from the textile industry, BSI has developed a new standard - PAS 2395 - that provides a specification for the assessment of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the whole life cycle of textile products. Applicable internationally, the standard deals with the entire life cycle of any product manufactured primarily from textiles and provides a robust and repeatable assessment of the emissions. Used in conjunction with PAS 2050 – the world’s first framework methodology for product carbon footprinting, ISO/TS 14067 or WRI/WBCSD’s GHG Product Protocol, PAS 2395 offers supplemental information allowing those within the textile industry to more effectively assess and reduce their GHG emissions and impacts. It includes sector specific requirements and related guidance.

CARBON FOOTPRINT FOR BEGINNERS - GUIDANCE FOR SMALLER BUSINESSES ON TACKLING THE CARBON FOOTPRINTING CHALLENGE

This free guide has been developed with the support of BIS and Defra specifically for organizations or sectors with limited experience to take the first steps in calculating the carbon footprints of their products. The guide offers practical guidance, through the use of case studies, to assist the reader in identifying what they need to know and how to get the necessary information. It can be used in planning, conducting and reviewing a carbon footprint. It provides a simple guidance framework with practical insights on the process, challenges and benefits of product carbon footprinting. Through this process organizations will learn more about the environmental impact of their product or service system and find opportunities to reduce the main impacts within the life cycle.

TEST METHODS FOR METALLIC PRODUCTS IN CONTACT WITH DRINKING WATER The BS 6920 series of standards have been developed to protect the UK population from non-metallic products that come into contact with drinking water, including the effect on flavour, odour and enhancement of microbial growth. They help ensure that the EU Drinking Water Directive and UK legislation is met. The standards provide requirements for the suitability of non-metallic products, including water fittings and components, pipes and materials used in coating, protection, lining, jointing, sealing and lubrication, for use in contact with either hot or cold water intended for human consumption. These standards are essential for any manufacturer of any non-metallic products that come into contact with drinking water.

WASTE PREVENTION AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY PROJECT REPORTS

BSI have conducted a project into existing standards that support waste prevention and the move to a ‘circular economy’. The work continues and we will now be considering the development of a framework standard for the circular economy and the role of ‘systems thinking’. BSI INVITES COMMENT ON THE FOLLOWING: ISO 14001 Environmental management system. Requirements with guidance for use

The draft of the world’s most recognized environmental management standard is now available for public comment. ISO 14001 helps organizations put systems and processes in place to boost their environmental performance. ISO standards are reviewed every five years to ensure they are still relevant in the marketplace. A significant revision of ISO 14001 is currently underway and the revised standard is expected to publish in September 2015. ISO 14001:2015 will be based on Annex SL – the new high-level structure that brings a common framework to all management systems. This helps to keep consistency, align different management system standards and applies common language across all standards. Comments are invited up until 31 October 2014.
